HISTORY OF THE CLUB

In 2014, a small group of the community members saw the constant increase of violent crimes occurring in the Chinatown neighborhood, which morphed into the Watch Group. Being organized, the Watch Group met with the Chicago Police Department's (CPD) 9th District commander and discussed the need for additional patrol officers in Chinatown. The commander's review of the statistics indicated very few instances of violent crime; consequently, the commander saw no need for additional resources in the area. The Watch Group realized the police statistics did not accurately reflect the amount of crime occurring in Chinatown because of the lack of crime being reported to the CPD and the lack of police reports generated for crimes committed in this neighborhood. The Watch Group dedicated themselves to educating the community about the importance of making 911 calls and filing police reports. Countless hours have been volunteered by the Watch Group to better the community. Since the inception of the Watch Group, it has assisted CPD make over 100 arrests stemming from the violent crime that has occurred in the neighborhood, including obtaining camera footage from local residents and businesses, who oftentimes did not speak English. As  a result, CPD has increased its resources in Chinatown because of the hard work done by the Watch group to educate the residents.
